Maya is an MFA graduate from the Experimental Animation program at CalArts, and holds an Ed.M. Most recently, she was signed as a director for commercial representation with 6 Point Media, an animation studio based in Hollywood. A music video she directed in 2011 (“New Cannonball Blues” for TV on the Radio) recently won “Best Music Video” at the 2012 Los Angeles Animation Festival, and was part of a longer format film “Nine Types of Light,” which was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. She creates intricate hand-made animations inspired by imaginary worlds and memories, using cut-paper, stop-motion, hand-drawn, and experimental film techniques within digitally enhanced worlds mixing low and hi-tech aesthetics and approaches. Specializing in cut-paper animation, her works have won prizes and have shown in various national and international film festivals, museums, and exhibits.
